ACE
International Cargo Risk Management
Whether you’re a small entrepreneur sending a truckload
of goods to the next town, or a large multinational
operation shipping worldwide, your reputation and
profitability depend upon safe delivery of your goods.
Cargo Risk Management provides professional solutions to
ensure that your goods are properly protected throughout
the complex and constantly changing modern
transportation chain.
ACE is an acknowledged leader in
Cargo Risk Management, employing over fifty dedicated
cargo specialists worldwide. This global expertise,
coupled with a sustained commitment to the provision of
comprehensive, quality marine cargo insurance programs,
is ACE’s unique approach.
The Cargo Risk Management Concept
The final stage in a successful business deal is
safe delivery to your customer. It is easy to believe
that arranging the transport and insurance cover ends
your responsibilities, but when things go wrong, you
quickly discover that the consequences still affect you.
These could range from damage to your reputation, a lost
opportunity in a new market, delays to completion of a
project, or contractual liability for late delivery.
Cargo risk management is about applying the same
commercial sense of loss minimization you adopt on site,
to protecting your cargo in transit. Every shipment is
subject to different hazards depending on a number of
factors, including the nature of the cargo, destination,
mode of transportation and routing. At ACE, we strike a
sensible balance between loss prevention and an
insurance contract to help business succeed. This
philosophy ensures that all viable steps are taken to
reduce the risk before it causes a loss.
Between 70% and 80% of cargo losses could be avoided by
proper risk management, and our Master Mariners will
work with you and any intermediaries to identify,
understand and control the specific risk factors
relevant to your cargo. Of course, we provide the usual
comprehensive insurance cover for cargo risks, whether
preventable or not.
The Benefits of ACE’s Risk
Management Program ACE’s unique team of Master Mariners
has developed an invaluable pool of technical knowledge
and expertise in the field of Cargo Risk Management
In the short term, we will work
with you to analyze the risks pertinent to your goods
reduce preventable losses and assist in engendering a
risk management culture in the relevant areas of your
organization. You benefit because your insurance is
priced more carefully for your specific situation to
give you premium stability.
In the longer term, reduction and control of transit
related loss incidents and resultant safe delivery of
cargo, enhances the relationship between you and your
customers. We also aim to create a more commercially
stable relationship between you, your brokers and
ourselves.
Why Cargo Risk Management is Important
You probably practice some form of risk management on
site that is relatively easy to control because you are
monitoring processes and actions “first hand”. Once your
goods are on the move, as cargo, the risk management
process becomes more difficult for you to manage, yet
remains vital for the success of your business. Your
customers become involved and major contracts and
projects may depend upon ensuring smooth running,
loss-free deliveries.
A fundamental part of ACE’s Cargo
Risk Management Program is to undertake a review of your
cargo operations. This allows the identification of
cargo risk elements specific to your operation, and
further identification and agreement of positive viable
actions which can be taken to reduce preventable losses
and improve the marine and transit risk.

ACE's Unique Cargo Risk
Management Approach
ACE’s underwriters have an innovative
approach to their business. Our underwriters are
predominantly account managers, coordinating and
directing the activities of claims, recoveries, credit
control, systems and loss management. They are dedicated
to servicing our clients by making the most effective
use of these other ACE services and in offering help and
advice on matters concerning import and export.
Our unique team of Master Mariners is
experienced in all aspects of cargo handling,
transportation and marine loss control. This specialist
team can provide a variety of marine technical support
services, ranging from general consultation to the
organization and implementation of a comprehensive Cargo
Risk Management Program.
We have an international network of
ACE offices and, should you require, we can usually
issue local policies in those countries where you are
represented. Even if local policies are not issued, our
colleagues abroad can still settle claims promptly and
professionally.
We are recognized as having a first
class Marine Claims team in London, focused on client
service. This team combines commercial reality with an
in-depth expertise that distinguishes our claims
capabilities from that of our competitors. When dealing
with international claims, the Marine Claims team is
supported by our Global Network.
Our 'in-house’ recoveries department will ensure that
enquiries are instigated immediately a loss is reported,
in order to quickly protect our clients’ rights against
responsible third parties.
Our Global Network of recoveries staff will take the most effective action for
local situations.
We will also help review the existing
and proposed transit contracts to check that all of your
rights are protected.
For our larger corporate clients, we allocate a specialist team
of dedicated account handlers, including a Service
Manager and representatives from each of their
disciplines. This provides focused points of contact and
enhances the communication process.
